“Just build a huge list of followers on Facebook and you’ll be all set!”

“Get as many followers as you can on Twitter and you’ll be rich!”

“Build rapport with as many people as possible and then sell to them anything you want!”

Have you heard some of these statements from some of the ‘over-night’ wonders out there? You know, the guru who started 7 months ago, made a million dollars and now talks about all the millionaires and billionaires they are meeting with daily?

Makes my blood boil.

First of all, anyone who made a million dollars super fast and has never done it before is most likely going to burn through it faster than oil on fire and won’t last. If they were wise enough to get a mentor they’d be working on how to turn that into $10 million dollars quickly. If they truly were meeting with Billionaires and millionaires on a daily basis they wouldn’t spend so much time talking about them without ever mentioning any names. Ok I’ll stop.

This New Economy online has grown so fast and in so many directions that it can be difficult at times to know who really is successful and who is just a professional actor.

I can always tell by the questions they ask and the things they give as their ‘answers for all’.

Someone asked me recently why I was having everyone opt-in to get my Free Report on the Biggest Mistake People Make In WordPress and Lose Millions. They implied I should just give this information away, not require someone to opt in. Interesting thought- and then I’ll just hope we meet again someday and I can help you build your business if we do? Maybe we’ll bump into each other?

When someone says, “Oh I’ve been online building a business for 23 years!” that doesn’t impress me. It shouldn’t impress you either. For someone to ‘be’ online building something for 23 years they’d better have at least some substantial dollars to show for it or that’s just a professional way of saying, “I like to talk to people on the internet.”

This New Economy is much more than whether you opt in or you give things away. It is a culture of value, more than ever before, but it’s also a culture of skepticism, distrust and caution.

Your prospects and customers are more suspect than ever before. Dan Kennedy outlines this better than anyone else I’ve seen write on this topic in his book “No B.S. Sales Success In The New Economy”. Grab it at Amazon, it will be truth serum for your business.

But something we must never forget is that the basics of business building have not changed. You still need to create a USP. Unique Selling Proposition. You still need to have something so unique, so ultra-specific, so urgent and so useful that everyone grabs it even if they might not use it right away.

Beyond that you still need to be tracking.

Gaining tens of thousands of followers on Facebook might put some money into your bank account quickly simply because of the numbers involved but if you’re not tracking and reading the data, you’ll drop the ball somewhere along the line. We see this when the big ‘guru’ makes about $ 10 million in under 9 months, goes onto sell his course about how he made said $10 million, brags about making $ 324,000,000 in just 7-days and then POOF…. disappears. The business didn’t last.

Am I saying that everyone who grows big and fast is going to fail? No way. But I am saying this. Internet Marketing Math, as MaryEllen Tribby (my personal coach and mentor) calls it is when someone gives stats on sales and growth but never accounts for returns, credit cards that didn’t process, cost of investment and other information that is critical when considering your ROI. They don’t talk about the real aspects of business that must come into play to build an empire or a dynasty that lasts for a long long time.

Do you want to build a new business every few years?

Do you want to look for a new business model every few years?

Or do you want to build something that lasts and then pursue your secondary goals? The ones that involve charitable contributions, impacting other cultures and really making an imprint on society for the good?

The New Economy online does allow you to build an entire business inside WordPress, without a ton of staff members and expenses. It does give you an ability to be profitable in ways we never dreamed were possible. It does make it easier than ever to succeed without a $ 20k monthly PPC budget and hundreds of thousands in expenses. But never forget good old-fashioned business sense when building your business.

Tracking
Testing
Reading data
Growing to the next level

A wise business owner doesn’t just throw something out there and then as it grows to $ 20 million go on a ‘wild ride’ without any forethought. NOR do they allow themselves to be influenced by someone with a ‘self-proclaimed’ track record, without endorsements or proof that they know what they are talking about.

Partner with people who have your best interest at heart- not just growing their company. Partner with people who have endorsements from people who aren’t also on their staff.

You’ll see some of these people in upcoming issues here in our newsletter as I share my braggable network with you. This will include people like MaryEllen Tribby, Michael Masterson, Brian Edmondson, Bob Bly, Rich Schefren and others.

If you give me just 59 minutes you will be in business and on track to start your online business in the best possible way there is. WordPress is the most critical component of all online success right now because of changes in Google, Facebook and how people are doing business. You’ll look like an eye sore and be left behind if you are not in WordPress.

But don’t worry- if you are a tech neophyte, I specialize in making WordPress simple, easy to use and getting my clients into action in less than 2 days. Join me in our next WordPress class if you’re serious about doing business online.

For the non-technical user be very careful using plugins.
Look to see what other users say (if the discussion gets into >,!<>… etc then unless you can fix it you’d best leave it alone.

Also look to see if the creator answers questions (frequently not) and be aware that plugins can cause corruption and loss of function of your site -which may require significant remedial work.

The 2 recent plugins for SEO seem to be in the above category?? – so are any users operating them without glitches?

Sandi: thank you for google info on finding my way back to Wordpress. Mercola & Jeffrey Smith GMO interview was already coming in well through YouTube so has maximum and very detailed early exposure and does not need my input right now–but Wordpress ought to be in there, too, from the very beginning. (You have no idea how impressed I was the first time I saw Wordpress up front on some very major breakthrough nationally!) My streamlining is serving me well and will make it possible to work in all urgent work. Also, I would like to do a wordpress treatment on the NIH Omnibus small business grants after current urgency is safely behind me. I have had enough help from NIH on finding my way through the voluminous information available on grants.gov and would like to make it compactly available to others–but you do need to be substantially registered as a potential grantee in order to have access to all of it. The grants are not giveaways but a way of making innovation and small business starts and expansions possible in a most responsible business way–new developments as of 1/2010–current deadline for review: august. (I would prefer to have someone else get this ball rolling because it is so major–i can always jump in with more insights later–that would be more efficient, wouldn't it?) I AM LISTENING TO YOU, SANDI. THANKS SO MUCH!)
